Both of you are allergic to fuss, and neither needs much emotional preamble. The Devil's Advocate wants to know why a thing works; the Fixer wants their hands on it. When those meet on a real object — an engine, a leaking pipe, a bad piece of code — it's deeply satisfying. The talking is where you diverge.

When you click

✦A camping trip, the generator dies, and it's dark. The Fixer is already at it with a headlamp and a multitool while the Devil's Advocate holds the light and runs theories out loud. Most of the theories are useless. One of them isn't, and the Fixer tries it without saying thanks or needing to.
✦Neither of you requires check-ins. You can go three weeks without a message and pick up exactly where you left off, mid-argument, no apology, no 'so how have you been.' Other people find this cold. You find it restful — nobody's keeping score of who reached out last.
✦Somebody says a thing can't be done. The Devil's Advocate says it obviously can; the Fixer says nothing and starts. That's how a rooftop ended up with a working pizza oven, a scooter ended up with an illegal top speed, and one bathroom door still doesn't close right.

When you clash

◇The Devil's Advocate thinks by talking, so a twenty-minute monologue is just processing out loud. The Fixer runs out of tolerance around minute six, gives a flat 'okay,' and mentally leaves. The Devil's Advocate keeps going, unaware they've been alone in the conversation for a while.
◇One of you wants to redesign the whole system; the other wants to fix the part that's broken today. On a shared project this stalls — the Fixer sees hours burned on a version that doesn't exist, the Devil's Advocate sees a patch on something that will break again in April.
◇When something real goes wrong for one of you — a job lost, a family thing — you both default to jokes and problem-solving. It works until it doesn't. Two people who'd rather fix than sit with it can leave a hard week entirely undiscussed, and both quietly clock that they did.

How others see you two

You're the two people everyone texts when something breaks, and by now they text you as a pair. Others notice you communicate in roughly nine words — one of you says 'hm,' the other says 'yeah, the bracket,' and the problem is solved. At parties, acquaintances assume you're not close, because you'll stand near each other saying nothing for long stretches. The ones who know you understand that the standing-near-each-other is the closeness. Someone summed you up as a talk show host and a silent guest who's quietly assembling something under the desk.

Reaching each other

Devil's Advocate: watch for the flat 'okay.' It means the Fixer stopped listening two minutes ago, not that they agree. Land the point, then stop. Ask them something about the actual object in front of them and they'll be back instantly.
Fixer: the talking isn't noise, it's how they find the answer. You don't have to engage with all of it — but saying 'keep going' once in a while costs nothing and tells them they're not performing to an empty room.
Neither of you will start the hard conversation, so make it structural. Say the difficult thing while your hands are busy — driving, cooking, working on the bike. Shoulder to shoulder, it comes out. Sat facing each other across a table, it never will.

Type codes only go so far. Two people with the same four letters can attach, argue, and show love in completely different ways — and that part only the people close to you can answer.
