The provocateur meets the one person who sees straight through the act.
The Devil's Advocate has spent their life being the most interesting person in the room and not necessarily the most known. The Oracle clocks them within an hour — the real opinions under the performance — and says so gently. That's disarming. In return, the Oracle gets someone who won't let their convictions go untested, and secretly loves it.

When you click
- ✦Every party ends the same way: the two of you on a balcony or a stairwell, ninety minutes into something enormous. Whether people are basically good, what you'd each do with a free year, the thing neither of you says sober. You come back inside and nobody noticed you were gone.
- ✦The Devil's Advocate argues a hard line about something. The Oracle waits, then says quietly, 'you don't actually believe that, you're upset about your brother.' It is simultaneously the most irritating and most useful thing anyone does to them, and it's exactly why they keep coming back.
- ✦The Oracle holds strong beliefs and often keeps them folded away, because arguing costs them so much. The Devil's Advocate will cheerfully fight anyone, and once they understand what the Oracle actually cares about, they'll take that fight on with real heat. The Oracle has never had that before.
When you clash
- ◇For the Devil's Advocate, a hard conversation is a workout that ends the moment it ends. The Oracle carries it home, replays the sharp part at midnight, and wonders what it meant. Two days later they raise it, and the Devil's Advocate has to be reminded it even happened.
- ◇The Oracle needs to know roughly what the week looks like. The Devil's Advocate answers 'we'll see,' which they experience as freedom and the Oracle experiences as a low hum of unease. Enough of that and the Oracle starts building a private plan they never mention to anyone.
- ◇When the Oracle is hurt they go still and warm and completely unreachable — nothing's wrong, everything's fine, door shut. The Devil's Advocate, who says everything the instant they think it, has no idea this is happening and keeps talking cheerfully into a room that's already been vacated.
How others see you two
Your friends have a theory that the Oracle is the only human alive who can shut the Devil's Advocate up, and they're right — everyone has watched a single look end an argument mid-flow. Others notice the Devil's Advocate checking the Oracle's face after making a joke, which they do for nobody else on earth. And the group treats you as one unit for anything requiring judgment: one reads the room, one says the unsayable, and between you, awkward situations get resolved with startling speed.
Reaching each other
- Devil's Advocate: your arguments end when you stop talking; theirs don't. Circle back the next day — 'we good?' — and mean it. Also give them a shape for the week, even a loose one. Vagueness costs them considerably more than it costs you.
- Oracle: when you go quiet, they honestly believe things are fine. One sentence — 'that landed badly, I need an hour' — is enough. They will not be wounded by it. They'd far rather be told than left talking into an empty room.
- Keep the long conversations. It's the format where you both stop performing: the Oracle stops managing everyone's comfort and the Devil's Advocate stops being entertaining. Protect it deliberately — a walk, a late drive, one dinner a month with nobody else invited.
Type codes only go so far. Two people with the same four letters can attach, argue, and show love in completely different ways — and that part only the people close to you can answer.
